Frequently Asked Questions
What is trigger finger?
Trigger finger occurs when the tendon or its sheath becomes tight or inflamed. In early cases, this can feel like pain and stiffness, but as it progresses, the finger can catch, lock or snap.
How is it treated?
Often, trigger finger will improve with splinting or injections. When symptoms persist, Dr. Thayer performs a small release to free the tendon and restore natural motion.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and typically causes minimal discomfort.
What is recovery like?
Most patients have some tenderness, swelling, and stiffness during the first few weeks and while the incision is healing. During this time, patients are allowed to move the fingers and use the hand for light activities. After the incision has healed, patients are allowed to return to normal activities.
Will trigger finger come back?
Recurrence is uncommon once the tendon sheath has been properly released.

- Some swelling and stiffness is normal and should improve steadily.
